About this MP3 to WAV converter

This tool decodes an MP3 with the Web Audio API and writes the samples straight out as a WAV file. No encoder library is involved: the browser's own decoder reads the MP3, and a small script assembles the standard 16-bit PCM WAV header and data around the result.

The output is always 44.1 kHz. If your MP3 was encoded at a different rate, such as 48 kHz, the decoder resamples it on the way through. Mono files stay mono, and stereo files stay stereo.

What this converter does not do

It decodes one MP3 into one WAV at a fixed rate. A few things it leaves out:

One fixed format

The output is always 16-bit at 44.1 kHz. There is no option for 24-bit audio or a different sample rate.

No tags

The decoder hands back samples only, so artist, title and cover art are not carried over.

Files get much bigger

A three-minute song can grow from a few MB as MP3 to around 30 MB as WAV.

One file at a time

Up to 100 MB. For several files, convert them one after another.

Frequently asked questions

No. MP3 is lossy, and whatever the encoder discarded when the file was made is gone for good. Writing the decoded samples to WAV stores them without further loss, but it can't bring back what the MP3 never had.

Some audio and video editors decode compressed formats slowly, or not at all. Handing them an uncompressed WAV avoids that, and it's also the format most audio processing tools expect.

Always 16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz, regardless of the MP3's own bitrate. A file recorded at a different rate is resampled to 44.1 kHz during decoding.
