About this PDF cropper

The cropper draws a page of your PDF with a dashed box on top. Drag the box, or type the four margins in points, millimeters or inches, and it saves a cropped copy of the file.

By default it changes each page's crop box with pdf-lib. That hides the margins but keeps the text selectable and the graphics sharp. The flatten mode turns the cropped pages into images instead, so whatever was outside the box is gone for good. All of this, and the preview drawn by PDF.js, happens in this tab.

How to use it

Open a PDF

Drop the file on the box above, or choose it with Select PDF file. The first page appears with the crop box on it.

Go to the right page

In a PDF with several pages, use Previous page and Next page before you adjust anything. Changing pages puts the box back to its starting size.

Set the crop

Drag the box or its corners, type the margins, or click a preset. Then choose all pages or only the page in the preview, and pick a crop mode.

Crop and download

Click Crop PDF. The cropped copy appears with a Download button, with _cropped added to the file name.

What it does

  • A dashed box on the page preview marks the part you keep. Drag it to move it, or drag a corner to resize it.
  • The top, bottom, left and right margin fields take points, millimeters or inches, and the box moves as you type.
  • Four presets set all four margins at once to 0, 15, 30 or 50 points.
  • The crop applies to every page or only to the page in the preview. Pages outside that choice are copied unchanged.
  • The default mode keeps text selectable. The flatten mode turns the cropped pages into 144 DPI images and removes what was outside the box.
  • Your browser reads and writes the PDF itself, so the file is not uploaded.

What the cropper does not do

It only trims pages. It doesn't delete, rotate or reorder them.

Hidden, not deleted

In the default mode the trimmed margins stay in the file, so it doesn't get smaller and a PDF editor can bring them back. The flatten mode removes them, but those pages become images and the file usually grows.

Changing pages resets the box

Previous page and Next page redraw the preview with the box back at 5% in from each edge. Go to the page first, then set the crop.

Same margins on every page

Every page you crop gets the same margins, scaled to its size. To crop pages differently, crop one page, then open the downloaded copy and crop the next.

No automatic trimming

It doesn't detect white margins for you. Set the box or the numbers yourself.

Encrypted PDFs

A PDF that needs a password can't be previewed. An encrypted PDF that opens without one still fails when you click Crop PDF.

Rotated pages

Some PDFs store pages sideways and rotate them for display. In the default mode, such pages can be cropped on the wrong edges. The flatten mode crops the page as you see it.

No. PDF.js draws the preview and pdf-lib writes the cropped copy, both inside this tab. The only downloads are those two libraries, from the cdnjs CDN, and no request carries your document.

Not in the default mode. It changes the page's crop box, so the margins are hidden but still in the file. If they must be removed, choose "Flatten cropped pages to images". Those pages then become images, and their text can no longer be selected.

Yes. Go to that page with Next page, set the crop, and choose "Only the page in the preview" under "Apply crop to". The other pages are copied into the new file unchanged.

Each time the preview draws a page, the box goes back to 5% in from each edge and the margin fields update to match. Pick the page first, then set the crop.

The margins are measured on the page in the preview. When you crop all pages, every page loses the same share of its width and height, so a page twice as wide loses twice as many points.
