About this JPG to PNG converter

The converter opens each JPG in your browser, draws it onto a canvas at full size and saves the pixels as a PNG. PNG compression is lossless, so the file keeps exactly what the browser decoded from the JPG, and saving it again as PNG loses nothing more.

It can't bring back detail that JPG compression has already removed. Blocky patches and colour banding in the JPG stay in the PNG, and the PNG of a photo is usually several times larger. Convert when an app or an upload form asks for PNG, or when you plan to edit and save the image many times.

How to use it

Click Convert to PNG. The files are converted one at a time, and the progress bar shows which file it is on.

Check the sizes

Each converted file shows the JPG size next to the PNG size. Expect the PNG to be larger.

Click Download next to a file, or Download all (ZIP) to get every converted file in one ZIP archive.

What it does

What the converter does not do

It changes the file format and nothing else. For other changes, use one of the other image tools.

No quality gain

The PNG keeps the image exactly as the JPG shows it, including any compression damage. Detail that was lost can't be recovered.

No transparency

JPG has no transparent areas, so every pixel in the PNG is opaque. The converter does not remove backgrounds.

Larger files

A photo saved as PNG is usually several times the size of the JPG. If you need a smaller file instead, use the image compressor.

Same dimensions

The PNG is not resized or cropped. To change its size, use the image resizer.

Camera data is not kept

The image is redrawn, so EXIF details such as the date taken and the GPS location are not copied into the PNG.

Very large images

Browsers limit how big a canvas can be, so a very large image can fail, most often on a phone. The file is then marked failed in the list.

No. The PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from the JPG, including its compression artifacts. What you gain is that editing the PNG and saving it again as PNG adds no new loss.

JPG makes photos small by discarding fine detail you are unlikely to notice. PNG keeps every pixel, and photos have too much fine variation for lossless compression to pack tightly, so the PNG is often several times larger.

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. This tool only changes the format. Removing a background needs an image editor.

No. Your browser converts each image inside this tab, and no request carries your files. The JSZip library is downloaded from the cdnjs CDN only when you use Download all (ZIP). Google Analytics on this site records how many files you add and their total size, not their names or content.

Each file can be up to 100 MB. Larger files are not added, and a message tells you why. There is no set number of files, but they are converted one at a time, so a long list takes a while.

Your images stay on your device

Your browser decodes each JPG and writes the PNG inside this tab. The images are not uploaded or stored, and closing the tab clears them from memory. JSZip is loaded from the cdnjs CDN only if you use Download all (ZIP).
