About this WAV to MP3 converter

This tool decodes a WAV file with the Web Audio API, then hands the samples to LAME, the same MP3 encoder built into most desktop audio software. LAME runs in a background worker so the page doesn't freeze while it works, and it writes a 192 kbps stereo MP3.

A WAV with more than two channels, such as a surround recording, is mixed down to stereo before encoding, since MP3 only carries up to two channels.

What this converter does not do

It writes one MP3 at one fixed setting. A few things it leaves out:

Fixed bitrate

Every file comes out at 192 kbps. There is no variable-bitrate mode and no way to pick a lower or higher rate.

No tags

The encoder writes audio samples only, so artist, title and cover art are not added.

Stereo only

A WAV with more than two channels is mixed down to stereo. Surround channels are not preserved.

One file at a time

Up to 100 MB. For several files, convert them one after another.
