About this PNG to GIF converter

The converter draws each PNG on a canvas at its original width and height, works out the 256 colours that suit that image best, and writes a GIF89a file around them. Logos, line art and screenshots come through well, because flat colour is what GIF compression was built for.

The two formats treat transparency differently. A PNG stores an alpha value for every pixel, while a GIF carries one fully transparent colour instead. A pixel whose alpha is below 128 becomes that transparent colour, and a partly transparent pixel is composited onto white.

The GIF is assembled by this page rather than by the browser, which has no GIF encoder of its own. Nothing is downloaded to do it: the palette, the LZW compression and the file itself all happen in this tab.

What this converter does not do

It writes one still frame with a 256 colour palette, which is as much as GIF can hold. Some jobs are better served elsewhere.

No animation

Each PNG becomes a one frame GIF. Assembling several images into an animation is not something this page does.

No soft edges

A GIF pixel is either opaque or fully clear. The soft shadow or anti-aliased edge a PNG fades out is composited onto white, so a logo drawn for a dark background will show a pale fringe.

256 colours at most

Flat colour art fits inside that. A photograph saved as PNG does not, and its smooth gradients will band.

No dithering

The palette is applied straight, without scattering pixels to imitate the missing colours, so banding stays visible rather than being traded for noise.

No resizing

The GIF keeps the pixel dimensions of the PNG. To change them, use Image resizer.

It stays clear. A GIF carries one fully transparent colour rather than an alpha channel, so every pixel with an alpha below 128 is mapped to that colour. Pixels that were only partly transparent, such as a soft edge, are composited onto white.

For flat colour work such as logos, line art and screenshots it often is, because GIF compression suits large areas of one colour. A photograph saved as PNG usually comes out larger, and Image compressor will do more for it.

GIF holds at most 256 colours. A photograph usually contains thousands, so the converter picks the 256 that suit it best and maps every pixel to the nearest one. Smooth skies and gradients show that as bands.
