About this JPG to GIF converter

The converter draws each JPG on a canvas at its original width and height, works out the 256 colours that suit that image best, and writes a GIF89a file around them. GIF cannot hold more than 256 colours, so a photograph is reduced to the palette the page picks for it.

The GIF is assembled by this page rather than by the browser, which has no GIF encoder of its own. Nothing is downloaded to do it: the palette, the LZW compression and the file itself all happen in this tab.

How to use it

What this converter does not do

It writes one still frame with a 256 colour palette, which is as much as GIF can hold. Some jobs are better served elsewhere.

No animation

Each JPG becomes a one frame GIF. Assembling several images into an animation is not something this page does.

256 colours at most

A photograph with smooth gradients will band, because GIF cannot describe more than 256 colours in one file.

No dithering

The palette is applied straight, without scattering pixels to imitate the missing colours, so banding stays visible rather than being traded for noise.

Often larger than the JPG

GIF compression suits flat colour and line art, not photographs, so the GIF is frequently the bigger file. For a smaller one, use Image compressor.

No resizing

The GIF keeps the pixel dimensions of the JPG. To change them, use Image resizer.

GIF holds at most 256 colours. A photograph usually contains thousands, so the converter picks the 256 that suit it best and maps every pixel to the nearest one. Smooth skies and gradients show that as bands.

No. Each file becomes its own single frame GIF. This page converts images one by one rather than assembling an animation.

Usually not. GIF compression was designed for flat colour, so a photograph often comes out larger than the JPG it started as. If a smaller file is the point, Image compressor or JPG to WebP will serve better.

A JPG has none to keep. For an image with a transparent background, PNG to GIF maps that background to the one clear colour a GIF can carry.
