About this WebP to GIF converter

The converter draws each WebP on a canvas at its original width and height, works out the 256 colours that suit that image best, maps every pixel to the nearest one and writes a GIF89a file around them. GIF cannot hold more than 256 colours, so a photograph is reduced to the palette the page picks for it.

Transparency is carried in the only way GIF allows. A pixel whose alpha is below 128 becomes the file's single transparent colour, and a pixel that is only partly see-through is composited onto white. An animated WebP contributes its first frame and nothing else, because that is all the browser's image decoder hands over.

The reason to make the swap is reach rather than size: GIF is still accepted in places that refuse WebP, from older forum and chat software to mail clients and content systems. The GIF itself is assembled by this page, so no encoder is downloaded to build it.

What this converter does not do

It writes one still frame with a palette of at most 256 colours, which is as much as GIF can hold. Some jobs are better served elsewhere.

Only the first frame

An animated WebP comes out as a still. The browser's image decoder hands this page the first frame and nothing else, so there is no animation left to carry over.

256 colours at most

A photograph with smooth gradients will band, because GIF cannot describe more than 256 colours in one file.

No dithering

The palette is applied straight, without scattering pixels to imitate the missing colours, so banding stays visible rather than being traded for noise.

Hard edges instead of soft ones

GIF has one transparent colour and no partial transparency, so a half transparent pixel is laid on white. A feathered edge can end up with a pale fringe. To keep the alpha channel, use WebP to PNG.

Often larger than the WebP

WebP compresses photographs far better than GIF does, so the GIF is frequently the bigger file. For a smaller one, use Image compressor.

GIF holds at most 256 colours. A photograph usually contains thousands, so the converter picks the ones that suit it best and maps every pixel to the nearest. Smooth skies and gradients show that as bands.

In the one form GIF understands. A pixel that is almost fully clear becomes the file's transparent colour, and a partly transparent pixel is laid on white. For a file that keeps the alpha channel as it is, use WebP to PNG.

Usually not. WebP was built to compress photographs and GIF was not, so the GIF is often several times the size. The reason to convert is that GIF is accepted where WebP is not.
